Kathmandu : Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been arrested. Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Myanmar’s ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), has been arrested, a party spokesman said.
According to the BBC, Suu Kyi was arrested amid rising tensions between the government and the military over allegations that the army was trying to assassinate her. The army is calling on the government to postpone Monday’s parliamentary session.
A spokesman for the party, Reuters, told Reuters by phone that Suu Kyi, as well as President Wu Mein and other leaders, had been taken away early in the morning.
According to the BBC Burma service, telephone and internet services have been shut down in the capital. Family members said the army had raided the chief minister’s residence in several places and taken him away.
The armed forces promised last Saturday that the army would abide by the constitution after concerns were raised that the army was trying to coup.
